THE MORE YOU KNOW

Learn below how toxins & endocrine (hormone) disruptors in the products we use every day impact our bodies:

Endocrine Disruptors

Chemicals that can interfere with the body's hormonal system, potentially leading to various health issues. Commonly found in many beauty and personal care products, these substances can mimic or block natural hormones, disrupting the body's delicate hormonal balance.

How Endocrine Disruptors Affect Hormones

• Hormonal Interference: Endocrine disruptors can imitate natural hormones like estrogen, binding to receptors and altering normal hormonal functions. This interference can lead to reproductive issues, developmental problems, and metabolic concerns.

• Accumulation in the Body: Regular use of products containing these chemicals can lead to their accumulation in the body over time, increasing the risk of adverse health effects.

Studies Highlighting the Impact

• Cosmetic Products as a Source: A 2023 study published in Cosmetics emphasizes that cosmetic products are a significant source of endocrine disruptors, including parabens and benzophenones. The widespread use of such products raises concerns about their potential to interfere with the endocrine system.

• Health Implications: Research indicates that exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in personal care products is linked to various health issues, such as reproductive impairments, neurological disorders, and immune system effects.

Common Endocrine Disruptors in Beauty Products

• Parabens: Used as preservatives, parabens can mimic estrogen and have been detected in breast tumor tissues, suggesting a potential link to breast cancer.

• Phthalates: Often found in fragrances, phthalates are associated with reproductive and developmental issues. A study found that personal care products like lotions and hair conditioners can expose children to these hormone-disrupting chemicals.

• Benzophenones: Commonly used in sunscreens and other cosmetics, benzophenones can disrupt endocrine function and have been linked to health concerns.

Reducing Exposure

• Choose Non-Toxic Products: Opt for beauty and personal care products labeled as free from parabens, phthalates, and other known endocrine disruptors.

• Read Ingredient Labels: Familiarize yourself with common harmful chemicals and avoid products that list them as ingredients.

• Support Clean Beauty Brands: Brands that prioritize non-toxic, clean formulations are committed to reducing harmful chemical exposure. Please beware of EU Standards - this does not mean the products are clear of toxins, clean or all natural.

By being mindful of the products we use daily, we can take proactive steps to protect our hormonal health and overall well-being.

Misconception of EU Standards

It’s a common misconception that European standards automatically mean products are "clean" or "all-natural." While it’s true that the European Union (EU) has stricter regulations than some other countries, like the United States, when it comes to banning certain ingredients, it doesn’t guarantee that products are truly clean or non-toxic. Here’s why:

European Standards Focus on Safety, Not Cleanliness

• The EU bans over 1,300 ingredients from cosmetics due to potential safety concerns, which is a lot compared to the U.S., where only about 30 ingredients are banned.

• However, just because an ingredient isn’t banned doesn’t mean it’s clean, natural, or non-toxic. Many synthetic chemicals that don’t meet the EU's threshold for banning can still be harmful over time or disrupt your health.

Banned Ingredients vs. Allowed Ingredients

While the EU bans a larger list of harmful substances, there are still thousands of approved ingredients that may:

• Be synthetic.

• Contain trace contaminants.

• Act as potential endocrine disruptors or skin irritants.

• For example, some parabens, which are linked to hormonal disruption, are still allowed in EU formulations at specific concentrations.

No Guarantee of "All-Natural" Ingredients

• European standards do not prioritize whether an ingredient is natural, plant-based, or organic. A product can still meet EU standards and contain synthetic chemicals or artificial preservatives.

• Many EU-compliant products use ingredients that are derived from petrochemicals or contain artificial fragrances, which are major contributors to skin irritation and hormone disruption.

Greenwashing is Still Prevalent

• Many beauty brands use terms like “meets EU standards” or “EU-compliant” to market their products as clean, when in reality, these terms don’t guarantee the products are free from toxins or safe for your health.

• Brands may also highlight a few banned ingredients to create the impression of safety, while the remaining formula is packed with questionable substances.

Ingredient Bans Don’t Cover Everything

• The EU focuses more on acute toxicity and immediate health risks rather than the long-term, cumulative effects of ingredients.

• Certain toxins that may take years to show their harmful effects, such as endocrine disruptors or ingredients contributing to oxidative stress, may still be approved.

Takeaway...

European standards are a step in the right direction but don’t equate to "clean," "all-natural," or truly "non-toxic." If you're prioritizing clean beauty, it’s important to dig deeper:

• Look for certifications like EWG Verified®, USDA Organic, or Leaping Bunny.

• Read ingredient labels to identify and avoid potential toxins like synthetic fragrances, silicones, or parabens.

• Choose brands that are transparent about sourcing and formulation processes.

True clean beauty goes beyond regulatory standards—it’s about prioritizing ingredients that are safe, effective, and beneficial for your skin and overall health.

Dangers of Fragrance

"Fragrance" on a product label might sound harmless, but it’s often a catch-all term for a cocktail of undisclosed chemicals—some of which can wreak havoc on your health. The beauty industry isn’t required to disclose the specific ingredients that make up a fragrance due to trade secret protections, meaning there’s no way to know exactly what’s inside. Here’s why that’s a problem:

Hormone Disruption

Many synthetic fragrance components are known endocrine disruptors. These chemicals mimic or interfere with hormones, throwing off your body’s natural balance. Common culprits include:

• Phthalates: Frequently used to make fragrances last longer, phthalates have been linked to reduced fertility, developmental issues, and hormonal imbalances.

• Synthetic musks: Found in many perfumes and scented products, they’ve been shown to accumulate in the body and disrupt hormonal signaling.

These disruptions can lead to issues like irregular menstrual cycles, worsened PMS, thyroid problems, and even infertility over time.

Toxic Load on the Body

Fragrance chemicals aren’t just skin-deep—they’re inhaled and absorbed into the bloodstream. The body often stores these toxins in fat cells or attempts to detoxify them through the liver, creating a heavier burden on your body’s natural detox systems.

Linked to Chronic Conditions

Fragrance chemicals have been associated with a range of health concerns, including:

• Respiratory problems like asthma and allergies.

• Neurological effects, including headaches, dizziness, and mood disturbances.

• Reproductive harm, especially in pregnant women and developing fetuses, as certain fragrance chemicals cross the placenta.

Environmental Concerns

The effects of synthetic fragrance extend beyond personal health. Many fragrance chemicals are not biodegradable, contributing to water pollution and harming marine life.

What You Can Do

• Avoid products with “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label unless they explicitly state they’re made with natural essential oils or are phthalate-free.

• Look for brands that are transparent about their ingredients and avoid synthetic additives altogether.

• Switch to non-toxic, fragrance-free, or naturally scented alternatives to limit exposure and reduce your toxic load.

Your health and your hormones will thank you!

Toxins Accelerate Aging

The toxins and chemicals found in many conventional beauty products can accelerate the aging process in several ways. Here’s a breakdown of why these harmful ingredients can age your skin—and why it’s essential to avoid them, especially as we get older.

Damage to Collagen & Elastin

• Many chemicals, such as parabens and phthalates, generate free radicals when absorbed by the skin. Free radicals damage collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm, plump, and youthful.

• As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, so using products that contribute to its breakdown speeds up the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Disruption of Skin Barrier Function

• Harsh ingredients like sulfates and synthetic fragrances can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. A weakened skin barrier allows environmental aggressors like pollution and UV rays to penetrate more deeply, causing further damage.

• With age, our skin barrier becomes more fragile, making it even more important to avoid products that exacerbate this vulnerability.

Hormonal Disruption

• Endocrine disruptors like parabens and synthetic fragrances can interfere with hormone levels. Hormones play a crucial role in maintaining healthy, youthful skin by regulating processes like cell turnover and hydration.

• Hormonal imbalances caused by these toxins can lead to acne, dullness, and other skin concerns that make you look older.

Inflammation & Oxidative Stress

• Many chemicals in beauty products, such as formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and artificial dyes, cause inflammation. Chronic inflammation accelerates aging by breaking down the skin’s structural components.

• Additionally, these chemicals contribute to oxidative stress, a key factor in premature aging, as it damages skin cells over time.

Toxins Affect Hydration

• Ingredients like alcohols and silicones may provide a temporary smooth appearance but can dehydrate the skin over time. Dehydration makes fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable.

• As we age, our skin naturally loses moisture more easily, so hydration becomes even more crucial.

Cumulative Effect Over Time

• Toxins in beauty products build up in the body over time. The longer we use them, the more damage they can cause to our skin and overall health.

• Switching to non-toxic products as we age helps minimize further exposure and allows the skin to heal and rejuvenate.

Why Switching to Non-Toxic Products is Key as We Age

• Nurtures Skin Health: Clean, non-toxic products are often rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and botanicals that protect against aging and support skin repair.

• Promotes Natural Glow: By eliminating harmful toxins, your skin can function optimally, leading to improved texture, hydration, and elasticity.

• Prevents Further Damage: Avoiding harmful chemicals reduces the risk of cumulative damage, allowing your skin to age gracefully.

• Supports Overall Wellness: What we put on our skin affects our whole body. Removing toxins from your routine can benefit your energy levels, hormones, and even sleep quality, all of which contribute to a more youthful appearance.

Investing in non-toxic beauty products isn’t just about avoiding harm—it’s about choosing to actively nourish and protect your skin for the long haul.

Toxins Mimic Natural Hormones

You can do everything in your power to fix your hormones—balance your diet, take supplements, manage stress—but if you’re still using products loaded with hormone disruptors, you’re constantly working against yourself.

Here’s why:

Hormone disruptors, like phthalates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, mimic or interfere with your body’s natural hormones, throwing your system out of balance. Every time you use products containing these toxins, your body has to work overtime to process and eliminate them. This puts extra strain on your hormones, leading to:

• Excess cortisol production (hello, stress and fatigue!)

• Estrogen dominance, which can cause weight gain, mood swings, and PMS.

• Thyroid dysfunction, slowing your metabolism and energy levels.

Using products with toxins doesn’t just stall your progress—it can actually make things worse by depleting your hormone reserves. Your body has to pull from your hormone supply to deal with the damage toxins are causing. Essentially, you’re pouring from an empty cup!

FACTS TO KNOW:

• A study by the EWG found that the average woman uses 12 personal care products daily, exposing herself to 168 different chemicals. Many of these are known hormone disruptors.

• The endocrine system is so sensitive that even low-level exposure to certain toxins can disrupt your hormones significantly over time.

• Synthetic fragrances, often labeled simply as "fragrance" or "parfum," can contain up to 3,000 different chemicals, many of which are harmful to your hormones.

If you’re serious about balancing your hormones, reducing your toxic load is key. Switching to non-toxic beauty and household products isn’t just about being “clean”—it’s about giving your body a fighting chance to heal and thrive.

The good news? You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. Start by swapping out the products you use most often, like skincare, makeup, and deodorant. Every little step you take makes a huge difference.

Your hormones will thank you, and so will your future self!

Nuwara Lashes

A completely non-toxic, glue-free way of getting the lashes of your dreams! When I had to ditch my DIY cluster lashes I was devastated!!!! But the truth is the bond/sealer is very toxic. I was on a mission to find a replacement, but honestly was not real hopeful because I have tried many other types. Until one day these magnetic lashes popped up in my feed that require no liquid or magnetic eyeliner whatsoever to adhere them. They looked fairly easy to apply so I gave them a shot. First impressions they were stunning and very well made! I will be totally honest it took me a few times to nail down the technique. It was brand new to me and like anything new it takes practice. Now I'm a pro after a handful of times and I'm addicted. No I can't wake up with amazing lashes everyday like I use to, but honestly to be able to remove these at night and apply them in 5 min. or less when I want to is the best of both worlds.

I ONLY use the magnetic lashes, no magnetic eyeliner. That is an option on the website, but it's not needed. You just need the anchor magnets that come with each lash set you purchase. I use a regular tweezers to apply them. If you watch the HOW TO APPLY video on the website, it's the second video where no eyeliner is being used.

For a shorter natural lash I like Bella. For a little longer more natural lash I like Hottie & Dreamy. And for a more glam/bolder lash I like Foxy & Sassy.
